New App To Prevent Electricity Vandalism Unveiled

Web Assets Nigeria Limited has introduced Hawk Eye, a new mobile app which the developers say will help cut down on activities of vandals and energy thieves in the electricity industry.

According to the developers, the app enables electricity distribution companies to address challenges of infrastructure, such as vandalism resulting from the theft of transformer parts and loss of revenue due to power theft.

Hawk Eye would enable mobile phone users to report different types of crimes including service complaints.

With this, users could select crime types, capture and send videos, images or text messages of the crime, the firm said, adding that the crime report would be directed to the responsible security agencies for immediate response.

According to Kayode Aladesuyi, the Chairman, Web Assets Nigeria Limited, developers of the software, about 30 per cent of power loss in the country was attributable to power theft.

At the official launch of the software in Abuja, the acting Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Anthony Akah, said the use of the software would enable electricity distribution companies in the country to record a significant decline in power theft and vandalism.

Addressing the issue of dilapidated electricity distribution infrastructure in rural communities within the company’s area of coverage was said by Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Ernest Mupwaya as another aim of the app to boost rural life and expressed the confidence of the company in the new software to assist in checking crimes in the power sector.

Scientists in Nigeria Produced Yams Cultivated on Trees

The availability and accessibility of high quality seed yam of improved varieties are the focus of a new US$12

million project aimed at revolutionizing the yam production system. This is intended to transform the formal seed systems in Ghana and Nigeria, Africa’s

largest exporter and largest producer of yam, respectively.

The flagship yam project, Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA), will embark on a second phase to boost the production of certified seed yam and improve smallholder farmers’ access to high quality seed yam for improved productivity, income, and food security.

YIIFSWA-II, a five-year project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will be led by IITA in collaboration with Context Global Development Network/Sahel Capital, and the governments of Ghana and Nigeria targeting the private seed sector. The aim is to provide smallholder farmers with high quality seed tubers of improved varieties that have been released, for example, TDr 89/2665, which farmers have dubbed as

“the Wonder Yam” in Nigeria due to its high yield and resistance to diseases.

Senator Criticizes Elrufai For Paying Off Fulani Herdsmen Terrorizing Southern Kaduna Villages

Senator Danjuma Laah, a senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District has described the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Elrufai as a callous, and crude bigot, over recent revelations in the media that he had paid off Fulani herdsmen terrorizing several communities and villages in Southern Kaduna.

Read the full press statement below:

Press Statement From Senator Danjuma Tella Laah for Immediate Use.

Gentlemen of the Press,
As the Senator representing  Kaduna South Senatorial  Zone, I hereby wish  to make  my assertion,  and indeed, views and position of  my constituency on some very vexing and serious utterances  made  by  Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state as it concerns the survival and wellbeing of Southern Kaduna.

This is from the outcome of Newspapers and online captions  quoting Governor Nasir El-Rufai as saying that he has had to trace some of the murderous Fulani  herdsmen that have been killing defenceless, innocent Southern Kaduna natives and destroying their villages. The news sources said that after tracing them, he told them that he was also a Fulani man and paid them sums of money to stop the massacre, burning and tearing down of scores of communities in Southern Kaduna.

That not done with, the governor also uttered a very bizarre threat that he has compiled for arrest and prosecution, names of persons asking the people of Southern Kaduna to defend themselves  against the obvious inability of the Chief Security Officer  of the state –  Governor Nasir El-Rufai –  to secure their lives and property and save them the trauma of being under perpetual fear of further unprovoked violence.

Knowing how swiftly he reacts to any untoward issue unfairly thrown at him in the media, I have waited for days to hear or read a rebuttal from him but to no avail.  This therefore confirms these unfortunate utterances as truly that of the governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. I wish to state that these statements are not only unfortunate, callous, insensitive, crude and demeaning of his office and intelligence, it throws him up as a bigot and hatter of Southern Kaduna and we are holding him as an accomplice in the ongoing genocide in Southern Kaduna.

According to the Leadership Newspaper of 4th December, 2016 under the headline: “Foreigners Behind Southern Kaduna Massacre – El-Rufai," he was quoted as saying about what happened during the 2011 post presidential election violence:
Some of them (Killer Fulani) were from Niger, Cameroon, Chad, Mali and Senegal,” adding that “Many of these people were killed, cattle lost and they organised themselves and came back to revenge. We took certain steps. We got a group of people that were going round trying to trace some of these people in Cameroon, Niger Republic and so on to tell them that there is a new governor who is Fulani like them and has no problem paying compensations for lives lost and he is begging you to stop the killing .

In most of the communities, once that appeal was made to them, they said they have forgiven. There are one or two that asked for monetary compensation. They said they have forgiven the death of human beings, but want compensation for cattle. We said no problem, some we paid.”

What a startling and an unacceptable revelation!
In the light of the above I wish to state as follows:
~That there was never in a time in 2011 that Fulani from Mali, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Mali and Senegal were killed in Southern Kaduna with their cattle. This is a silly and an absurd lie. Southern Kaduna is not a junction of these countries. So how could they have all converged on Southern Kaduna on their usual migration back home? The Governor just invented this lie to make excuse for his imported murderous Fulani kindred to continue their extermination of our people and the occupation of our lands.
~As the main political leader and representative of Southern Kaduna at the Federal level, despite many overtures of trying to meet with the governor over the insecurity in my zone with no success, he has never deem it fit to inform me of these actions so as to seek my views and that of my constituency over the matter. This is a very curious development, especially as I was able to make the Senate to pass a resolution asking the Federal Government to declare a State of Emergency on Security in Southern Kaduna last month. I expected him to cash on that, using his connection with the President and Commander-in-Chief. But, he was obviously not concerned.
~In the light of the above,  the  Federal Government, especially the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, NIA,  the Directorate of State Services, DSS, the Directorate of Military Intelligence, DMI and sundry agencies should look no further for the solution to the unrelenting killings in Southern Kaduna. El-Rufai must be held to produce the killers of innocent Nigerians since he has been able to identify them and their locations. This will lead to their sponsors in Nigeria and other places.  Nigeria should then use its diplomatic relationship and extradite these murderers of its citizens, plunderers and arsonists to face justice in Nigeria.
~After Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s term in office, it should be possible to prosecute him for being an accessory to mass murder, since he has refused to reveal these findings to the rightful authority for actions to stop the evil that is spreading to many states today.
~Governor Nasir El-Rufai should also state how much of Kaduna State scarce resources have been moved to these killers and whether he has the authority of the law to so spend the money on enemies of Southern Kaduna and Nigeria.
~El-Rufai should also be investigated to find out if these moneys were not further put into the buying of more arms and the recruitments of more killers, who we strongly believe, are also jihadists.
~Though he has ferried much undisclosed amounts of money to murderers, I am pleading with Kaduna State indigenes and residents to ask why he has stubbornly refused to render basic assistance of rebuilding of even a home, or any form of monetary assistance to the surviving victims in Southern Kaduna. Most are still left without food and shelter despite the modest assistance that some of us, churches, NGOs etc have continued to render from time to time.
~I am constrained to add that Nasir El-Rufai with his lack of  will to show commitment to the insecurity in Southern Kaduna, and his resolve to carry on with over six Cattle Grazing Reserves in Southern Kaduna, he is actually creating new, permanent “conquered” settlements for his Fulani kinsmen. I said this because his Fulani brothers have  killed people and chased them out from their communities and are now fully settled with their families and cattle in several villages  in Kaura, Sanga and Jema’a Local Government Areas, while the governor turns his eyes the other way round.
~My conviction on this is based on the findings that the State government was able to wage a concerted war against cattle thieves and bandits in the expansive forests and hills of  Birnin Gwari  environs and easily succumbed the criminals, but has refused to extend even a fraction of that effort to save precious human lives and human communities in Southern Kaduna. The simple reason is that just as it is in the interest of  law abiding Fulani to recover their cattle and goats in Birnin Gwari from same rogue Fulani, it is also in the interest of Fulani to leave our  damaged and, yet  to be ruined communities, weak and helpless for them to easily take over.
I hinged my believe on the above based on threat the governor gave against Southern Kaduna trying to defend itself from the unprovoked aggression. He said in that story:

There are people that are sending a message, 'defend yourselves'. We  will get them. 'Defend yourself' is hate speech. You can’t defend yourself if there is a government. We are going to arrest and prosecute all those that pass that message.”
To me, this  is very strange and ridiculous. But it is also pregnant with meanings. Why is the governor saying that Southern Kaduna should not deploy self-defence when El-Rufai’s Fulani marauders come hacking them down and burning their communities with the governor unable to tame his brothers?

In what way will it benefit Southern Kaduna if it does not defend itself and it’s  population killed,  survivors sent out as refugees? Because it is clear that instead of El-Rufai stopping the carnage, it seems to be rising the more since he has gone to give them money. It is only the Fulani that will gain, of course! That is the meaning. It cannot be that Nasir El-Rufai is unaware that section Chapter VII, Article 51 of the Human Right Charter of the United Nations  and Section 33(2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria has affirmed self-defence as a Human Right.
I see this as a threat to scarr Southern Kaduna from standing up to his Fulani  killer brothers.

Based on this, I call Governor Nasir El-Rufai to first arrest me. Because I am calling on Southern Kaduna, once more, to use every available legitimate means to defend their lives, property and communities. History will not forgive our generation if we succumb to threats and blackmail and fail to defend ourselves and get wiped out. As the Senator of the beleaguered  area, I cannot support that we become sitting ducks each time they come killing. Again, if El-Rufai will not defend us, let us defend ourselves.

Selective Punishment

On the 15th of August 2016, Dr. Haruna Usman, Chairman, Kaduna State Chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association said, as revealed in several news publication the next day, that the mindless killings and destruction of Ninte village, near Godogodo in Jema’a LGA was carried out by his members in what he said was reprisal against the murder of a Fulani ardo in the village.

Again, on the 7th of November 2016, Abdullahi Hassan Mohammed (Wanban Jema’a) of Jema’a Foundation; Ahmad M. Yandeh, of Mobgal Fulbe Development Association and Abdullhamid Musa, Zonal Chairman of Miyetti Allah Zone III addressed a press conference in Kaduna and again, said that it was Fulani that have been carrying out the bloodshed and arson in Southern Kaduna. They said they were defending themselves. The killings of infants;  pregnant women; the burning to ashes of children and women and  very aged people; the burning down of entire villages; the burning of churches; the stealing of livestock, looting and burning of food and crops on farmlands; the further occupation of the villages, all as “ self defence.” The Fulani chieftains are walking free and the killings are ongoing.

But, when the 85 year old  traditional ruler of  Misisi village, in Kaninkon Chiefdom, in Jema’a LGA,  John Zogo was killed  by Fulani armed men with six others during a phony meeting with soldiers, instead of a Fulani ardo to be held to account for the killings, it was the district head of late baba Zogo, the District  Head of Goska,  Mr Moses Barde that was arrested and detained illegally for weeks by the police in Kaduna.

Mr Moses Barde is just one of several other  southern Kaduna men held on trumped up charges after their communities have been ravaged, while the armed Fulani armed men continue to freely prowl over our communities. This scale of injustice is rare anywhere in the world.

Conclusion:

I call on all Southern Kaduna natives, all Hausa and Fulani of our area  who are genuinely interested in peace to forget about political, tribal and religious leanings and come together in prayers and for genuine dialogue amongst ourselves as the last option left for peace and security in Southern Kaduna.

I want to add that my colleague and I in the National Assembly will continue to do our best to secure Federal assistance to add to what we are doing at home against this evil.
However, as it has become manifest through the utterances, actions and inactions of Governor Nasir el-Rufai,  Southern Kaduna must prepare to defend itself using every possible means of defence that is lawful against killer Fulani who are now on the loose more than ever, even as we search for solutions to this heinous crime against our land.
Thank you, gentlemen.

Signed: Senator Danjuma Tella Laah,
(PDP, Kaduna South Senatorial District)

Days ago, I informed a brother that has been in poultry farming that I plan to take a loan and start a poultry business. Tourists Gather for Cocoa Festival in Osun

Grand finale of cocoa festival held in Eti-Oni ancient town was witnessed yesterday by tourists from various parts of the world. The cocoa festival is the first of its kind in Africa and it was set up to motivate cocoa farmers to step up their production.

The event was designed to train the cocoa farmers and sensitize them on the modern technology in cocoa farming so that they would be producing high quality cocoa and make maximum profit.

A Farmer Field School was organised at Eti-Oni in which experts from Osun State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security were taken to the cocoa farms to train the cocoa farmers on the best way to cultivate, harvest and market their cocoa.

The traditional ruler of Eti-Oni, the Oloni of Eti-Oni, Oba Dokun Thompson, was commended by Aregbesola, who was represented by the Director General of the Office of Economic Development, (OEDP), Dr Charles Akinola,  for initiating the cocoa festival.

The governor said the festival has provided a veritable platform to bring stakeholders in the cocoa business together to share ideas on cocoa production and other aspects of agribusiness as a way out of the
current economic recession.

Aregbesola urged other traditional rulers in the state to take a leaf out of Oloni of Eti-Oni by coming up with initiatives that would promote the agriculture potentials in their domains.

The monarch said the festival attracted tourists from different parts of the world because of the historical background of the Eti-Oni as the pioneer of cocoa production in Nigeria. Oba Thompson added that because of the significant roles played by his forefather, Gureje in the Kiriji/Ekiti Parapo war which terminated between Igbajo and Imesi-Ile in Osun State, the cocoa festival would
also be used to mark the 130 years of the signing of the treaty that brought war to an end.

NIMET Warns Nigerians To Be Wary Of Dust Outbreak

The Nigerian Meteorological agency (NIMET) has alerted Nigerians on outbreak of dust in some part of the country in the next two days.

“In the course of monitoring the weather situation in and outside Nigeria, NiMet has observed that in the past 24hours, dust has been raised over the source regions in Niger/Chad republic which will be transported by northeast trade winds into and across the country. Visibility as low as 100m were reported by some stations in the Niger republic," NIMET said.

This was contained in an official statement made available to the media. The statement also stated that the expected increase in concentration of the dust particles would lead to colder and drier atmosphere as well as increase in incidences of respiratory disorder.

“There is prospect of fresh dust plumes being raised in the coming days, with its attendant consequences as indicated in the earlier press release. NiMet however, assured of its continuous monitoring of the weather and climate conditions as they unfold and provide regular updates and advisories to the general public. It will be recalled that the agency had towards the end of October, 2016 issued an advisory forecast for dust outbreaks to affect the country during the December to February dry season period while the weather condition compels airlines to delay or cancel scheduled flights whenever horizontal visibility falls."

10 Agricultural Products You Must Not Bring To Nigeria; (1) Will Surprise You

Under Nigerian law, importation of the following agricultural products is prohibited.

1. Water: Water is a universal solvent that is found everywhere in adequate quantity. But some some people still import it to Nigeria. Even you my distinguished readers can recall that the last time you were on transit through that Seme border, you unapologetically kept bottled water packs by the driver's seat. Thank your star that I was not given employment in the Nigeria Custom Service last recruitment exercise.

2. Soaps and Detergents: I know you want to ask me whether soap is an agricultural product or not. You should know that soap is made by a process called saponification. Saponification is defined as alkaline hydrolysis of fat and oil. And how do you obtain fats and oils? Your guest is as good as mine. Going through Nigeria Custom Service's website for prohibited items, I knelt down to thank God having save me from jail terms...you know during my return journeys from Abidjan, I usually fill my bags with those fancy soaps.

3. Live or Dead Birds including Frozen Poultry: I pray our government won't lift ban on this product soon. My friend just acquired a loan from one microfinance bank and started a poultry enterprise. Should he fail in this business, that will herald the end of my weekend's chop-and-clean-mouth paroles in his house.

4. Pork, Beef: Well, I'm sure President Buhari won't allow importation of beef to spite his Fulani brothers, who are mainly herders. But as for pork, let them lift embargo on that ASAP. I just resigned as a manager in a very big pig farm. One Mr Tembo associated with Shoprite has been on my neck for weeks to increase supply of pigs with lean meat. Even if they lift embargo on pork, international suppliers too are looking for more to import into their countries. Pork may be an agricultural product in highest demand at present.

5. Birds Eggs – Excluding hatching eggs.

6. Refined Vegetable Oils and Fats [but excluding refined Linseed, Castor and Olive oils. Crude vegetable oil are however NOT banned from importation].

7. Cane or beet sugar and chemically pure sucrose: We have that in abundance. Only dullards will indulge in such.

8. Cocoa Butter, Powder and Cakes: This is a good omen for Ogbeni Aregbesola who recently revived cocoa processing firm in the State of Osun.

9. Spaghetti/Noodles: Let any government tries lifting ban on this and watch Dangote eats them alive.

10. Fruit Juice in retail packs: What difference does that make? Importation is importation, even when it is directly imported by the manufacturer.

Don't add yours, because I know that Tosyne2much is already thinking of toothpicks.

Osun Denies Receiving N82b From FG; Generates N1.5b From Agribusiness-driven Economy

The Osun state Government has Thursday debunked the insinuation making the round that the state has received a sum of N82bn from Federal Government.

The state described as propaganda and blatant lie deliberately cooked to incite public against government of the State of Osun.

Osun has been at the centre of insinuations that the state government through the information credited to one  Senator Dino Melaye, received N82bn from the $4bn being over-deductions on Paris and London Club Loans.

The Government, through the Bureau of Communication and Strategy, office of the Governor, said there was nothing like an N82bn paid to Osun out of an imaginary “$4bn being over-deductions on Paris and London Club Loans on the accounts of State and Local Governments from February 1990 to March 2002”.

According to the statement signed by the Director of the Bureau, Semiu Okanlawon said, “It sounds warped that such information would emanate from an interloper to Nigerians”.

Okanlawon said if Nigeria received the alleged funds and such huge amounts are to be credited to respective states, simple logic dictates that the Ministry of  Finance, the Ministry of Information and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation would be duly involved and communicate such a development to Nigerians through the appropriate quarters.

“It is curious that since the misinformation was released and credited to a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Dino Melaye, who was reported to have manufactured the misinformation has not come out to deny making the statement.

“Much more curious also is the direct reference to the Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who was singled out and asked to pay his state workers from the non-existent N82bn”, the statement added.

“We consider this as a direct incitement of the people of Osun and especially the workers who have shown great understanding due to the transparency the governor has brought into his handling of the affairs of the state.”

The  State has increased its internally generated revenue from N300m to N1.5b as a result of aggressive agribusiness upgrade, FarmTech9ja has learnt.

Is It Not Dangerous Eating This?

My neighbour killed the animal below in his nearby garden.

If the location of the kill has been very far into the bush, I would support eating it.

We should be wary of leptospirosis as this kind of thing might have been in contact with those rats in Ejigbo, Lagos. Some of you guys from Lafenwa street know what I mean.

Agric Internship at MOT Ranch, Oyo

MOT Ranch is an agricultural firm located in the outskirt of Oyo.  They raise cattle,  goat,  sheep,  and pigs in commercial quantities.

MOT Ranch takes in at least 5 students every 4 months. They provide full accommodation and feeding,  at least 2k stipends monthly,  and attractive payoffs.  Only students from School of Animal Production and Health, Igbo-Ora have been enjoying this farm so far.  Application is not dependent on favouritism.  Students just walk into the farm for documentation.

Address: Ajegunle Village, Oyo.

I have been there before. Ask for Ijawaya Okada park in Saabo,  Oyo and tell them the name of the farm.

Goodluck!

Why You Should Not Raise Pigs and Ruminants in the Same Premises

Pigs production and ruminants production in the same premises is a big 'NO', research and experience have shown.

As a farm manager, we raise pigs and ruminants in the same premises and have been paying dearly for it.

We have had sudden deaths, untreatable scouring in our herds times without number. Since that the business plan of the entire farm is wrong, and the management hates to be told the truth, I spilled the beans when I deemed it necessary.

We rear two breeds of goats -- West African Dwarf(WAD) breed and Sokoto red breed. We used Sokoto red goat male to mate WAD females. Crosses obtained have hardy nature of WAD goats and with long legs and hefty build of Sokoto red goats.

Along the line, scouring broke out among the ruminants and almost reached an epidemic situation. WAD goats showed great resistance. Crosses from the two breeds survived after isolation. But no Sokoto red goat made it. All infected sheep died. None of the dead animals responded to treatment. It is pertinent to note that if the problem in the original Northern domain that the Sokoto red goats are adapted to, some of them would have survived.

My Findings

Viral diseases have no cure but can be managed in some situations. Whenever you are dealing with scouring ruminants, five things should be targeted.

1. Bacterial infection: Antibiotics should be given to scouring ruminants first before thinking of drugs with diarrheal etiology.

2. Coccidiosis: Ruminants affected by coccidians will likely scour. You will distinguish whether the scour is as a result of bacterial infections or coccidiosis by the following: If the ruminant is scouring but has appetite, it is coccidiosis. If the ruminant is scouring but inappetent, it is as a result of bacterial infections.

3. Poisonous plants: Differential diagnosis includes toxic plant poisoning by crotalaria, senecio, cocklebur etc. While dealing with poisonous plants, knowing the name of the plant will help, but generally, stomach protectants like vegetable oil should be included in remedies.

4. Disinfectant poisoning: In our piggery, disinfectants are placed in feet baths that those entering the piggery may disinfect their feet with it. But ruminants like drinking scented liquids. So at times I have seen them drinking from the feet baths.

Most disinfectants have active ingredients like phenols and cresols which cause oesophagus, and nonspecific liver and kidney lesions. The carcass is icteric, and with excessive fluid in the peritoneal cavity. See pic of a poisoned ewe below.

5. Aujeszky's Disease: This is a viral disease that has no treatment. It is characterized by sudden death and other nonspecific symptoms. It is worthy of note that in cases of disease or deaths in ruminants in the proximity of pigs, there should primarily be a strong suspicion of Aujeszky's disease irrespective of the symptoms observed.

Why You Need Volunteer Jobs

For those who have been made redundant and may otherwise have to claim benefits, full-time voluntary positions can even mean they will be better off.

While they may not all include such splendid accommodation, many voluntary jobs offer free meals or allow volunteers to claim a food allowance. Others also cover travel expenses and give volunteers a weekly allowance for essentials such as toiletries. These all-inclusive packages can make it a lot easier for volunteers without savings to give up a few months, or a year, particularly if they are otherwise struggling to find paid work.

The real perk is having free training in things like tractor driving and pesticides. Otherwise you will have to pay for it and may find it difficult. Even though you are not earning a salary, you get free lodgings and gain experience working in the field you want to spend your career in.
